Who We Are
Letters From was founded by Matthew Maude and Mabel Evans. Matthew is a director, writer and producer. After starring in the UK ITV soap Crossroads during his teenage years, Matt moved to working behind the camera, directing and producing adverts, documentary television series, promos, music videos and shorts. As a screenplay writer and fiction director, Matt won the Kirin First Press Award for direction and the Epic Award for Best Screenplay. His first documentary feature film ‘General Magic’ premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and won Best Documentary at the LA Film Awards and Montana International Film Festival.
Mabel is a film maker, writer and activist. She has previously worked in documentary film and runs a charity called The Vavengers. The aim of the charity is to use the arts to fundraise for and shine light on the UK based community fighting to end Female Genital Mutilation. She believes strongly in the need for community and collaboration with regards to creative and social endeavours. Mabel hopes the retreats will offer a chance for writers at all stages in their careers to feel the constraints of self doubt and the distraction of city living melt away. Reigniting their passion for storytelling.
What We Do
Matt and Mabel are on hand the whole time during the retreat to offer support and guidance to guests writing. Optional writing exercises are set by the organisers at 3pm, guests are encouraged to share what they have written after dinner. An example of en exercise might be...write the last moments of someones life or find a person in today's news paper and write from their perspective. These activities, as well as daily yoga, guided walks and an in house chef, allow the space to be created for attendees to feel supported and invigorated in their writing.
